In the aftermath of the cyberattack on Sony Pictures and the subsequent mass release of hacked documents, the world has witnessed an unprecedented level of fear and anxiety.
Now, as we enter 2017, we are witnessing a new form of fear in the form of ‘new media’ which can help us stay safe.
The New Media Movement The New Media is a movement of individuals, groups, and institutions, both within the entertainment industry and beyond, who are committed to creating and sharing innovative, creative, and powerful new media and information, with a focus on breaking down the barriers between people, ideas, and facts.
Its aim is to create a new space for communication and collaboration that has the power to change how people interact and work, and ultimately shape the future of society.
New Media movements are growing across the world and are being pioneered in the UK, US, France, Italy, Germany, India, and other countries.
In 2016, the UK-based Media Lab hosted a conference entitled ‘Creating the New Media in 2017: The New Wave’, which focused on how ‘new wave’ content can be created in 2017.
The conference drew a broad range of experts from across the creative industries to discuss how the emerging wave of new media could be used to promote new, innovative ways of making content and services that people want to consume and support.
New media can create a space where we can all be free to make the connections we need to make our lives better, create more opportunities for each other, and have more power in the world.
In 2016, New Media movement organizers also launched a crowdfunding campaign for a New Wave exhibition, ‘The New Wave: Creativity in the Age of Digital’.
The exhibition will feature a diverse range of new creative voices in the media sector from designers to journalists, actors, filmmakers, designers, and educators.
New Wave is one of several exhibitions being developed and curated at the Media Lab and the New Wave website, which can be found at https://www.newwave.org.uk/new-wave/.
